Undergraduate Admission Eligibility – Tongmyong University

1. Academic Requirements

·         Applicants must have completed or be expected to complete high school education, equivalent to 12 years of formal schooling.

·         The qualification must be recognized as equivalent to a Korean high school diploma.

2. Nationality Requirements

·         International students must:

o    Be non-Korean citizens.

o    Have both parents as non-Korean citizens (dual citizenship is not accepted in most cases for international admissions).

o    For Korean-heritage applicants (e.g., overseas Koreans), separate guidelines may apply.

3. Language Proficiency

·         If applying to a Korean-taught program:

o    Must have TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) Level 3 or higher.

o    Higher levels (TOPIK 4 or 5) are preferred or may be required depending on the department.

·         If applying to an English-taught program (if available):

o    Must submit proof of English proficiency, such as:

§  TOEFL iBT 71+

§  IELTS 5.5+

§  TEPS 600+

·         Language exemptions may be granted if previous education was conducted entirely in Korean or English.

4. Required Documents

·         Completed application form.

·         High school transcripts and graduation certificate.

·         Language proficiency certificate (TOPIK, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).

·         Study plan or personal statement.

·         Passport copy.

·         Financial statement (to prove ability to fund studies and living costs).

·         Letters of recommendation (optional for some departments).

5. Additional Notes

·         Some departments may require portfolios (e.g., design or fine arts programs) or interviews.

·         Applicants must meet any program-specific requirements.

·         Admission is competitive and holistic, considering academic performance, language skills, and personal motivation.

Graduate Admission Eligibility – Tongmyong University

1. Academic Qualifications

·         Master’s Degree Applicants:

o    Must hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution.

o    For international applicants, the degree should be recognized as equivalent to a Korean bachelor's degree.

·         Doctoral Degree Applicants:

o    Must possess a master’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution.

o    For international applicants, the degree should be recognized as equivalent to a Korean master's degree.

2. Language Proficiency

·         Korean-Taught Programs:

o    Applicants should have achieved TOPIK Level 3 or higher.

o    If the applicant has not achieved the required TOPIK level, they must enroll in the university's Korean Language Course until they meet the requirement.

§  The course entails 2 hours per day (17:00–19:00), totaling 10 hours per week over 20 weeks per semester.

§  Course fee: 1,200,000 KRW per semester.

o    Applicants who have not achieved TOPIK Level 3 cannot apply for transfer as a 4th-year student.

·         English-Taught Programs:

o    Applicants should have one of the following:

§  TOEFL PBT: 530 or higher

§  TOEFL CBT: 197 or higher

§  TOEFL iBT: 71 or higher

§  IELTS: 5.5 or higher

§  TEPS: 600 or higher

o    Test results must be valid until after the semester starting date.

3. Nationality Requirements

·         Applicants and their parents must be non-Korean citizens.

·         Dual citizenship (Korean and foreign national citizenship) is generally not acceptable.

4. Required Documents

Applicants are required to submit the following documents:

1.      Application Form: Including a personal statement.

2.      Copy of Passport: Valid for the duration of the study period.

3.      Photographs: Three color passport-sized photos (3.5cm x 4.5cm) with a white background.

4.      Copy of ROK Alien Registration Card: For registered domestic residents.

5.      Proof of Nationality:

o    Copies of parents' ID cards or passports (notarized in English if not in English).

o    Family Relations Certificate with parents (notarized in English if not in English).

6.      Language Proficiency Test Results: Valid TOPIK, IELTS, TOEFL, or TEPS scores.

7.      Educational Background:

o    High school transcript and graduation certificate (notarized in English if not in English).

o    For transfer applicants:

§  Certificate of graduation or completion from college or university.

§  Transcript of college or university (notarized in English if not in English).

8.      Financial Documents:

o    Certificate of bank balance: Up to USD 9,000 within 30 days.

o    Certificate of financial statement:

§  Applicant’s certificate of employment or career and income, or

§  Sponsor’s certificate of employment and income.

9.      Copy of Parent’s ID or Passport: Unless possessing a passport, submit a copy of citizenship.

10.  Certificate of Family Relations.

Note: Academic certification documents must be notarized according to one of the following options:

·         For countries associated with the Apostille: Must be proved by Apostille.

·         For countries not associated with the Apostille: Must be proved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Korean Embassy.

5. Application Schedule

Tongmyong University typically has two intakes per year:

·         Spring Semester (March Start):

o    Application Submission: November 1 – December 7

o    Screening: December 11 – December 22

o    Admission Result Notification: December 29

o    Registration for Admitted Students: December 29 – January 10

o    Semester Starts: March 4

·         Fall Semester (September Start):

o    Application Submission: May 1 – June 7

o    Screening: June 11 – June 21

o    Admission Result Notification: June 28

o    Registration for Admitted Students: June 28 – July 10

o    Semester Starts: September 2
