Solent University (formerly Southampton Solent University) is a public university based in Southampton, United Kingdom. It has approximately 11000 students. Its main campus is located on East Park Terrace near the city centre and the maritime hub of Southampton.
Solent University students are represented by Solent Students' Union, which is based on the East Park Terrace campus.
Solent University is all about creating opportunities: for its students, for its staff, for its partners. It offers expertise and experiences you couldn’t get anywhere else, opening doors and making introductions.
They are focused on the practical side of higher education – giving their students the connections, experience and confidence to turn their newfound knowledge into a career with real, meaningful impact. Whoever you are, whatever your goals, they want to help you make your mark.
If there's one thing that their 160 year history has taught them, it's that employers are expecting more than ever from modern graduates. They believe that their job is to ensure that you leave your course ready to exceed those expectations - equipping you with the hands-on skills and workplace confidence you'll need to succeed.
Employability sits at the heart of everything they do. Their curriculums, created in collaboration with industry employers, guarantee that the skills and knowledge they gain have genuine market value. Their teaching teams extend this value, injecting their first-hand experience into every aspect of your degree.
Everyone learns differently. If at any point during your studies you feel you may benefit from extra support, you'll be able to access it. This isn't limited to academic support either. Whether you want help setting up your own business, are worried about your finances or simply want help with looking for part-time work, their support services will be there for you.
Solent has been a university since July 2005, but it has a long and complex educational history.
Incorporated as an independent higher education institution in 1989, the University's origins can be traced back to a private School of Art founded in 1856. Mergers between Southampton College of Art, the College of Technology and the College of Nautical Studies at Warsash laid the foundations for what is now Solent University.
Since becoming a university, Solent has helped nearly fifty thousand students from all walks of life to make the most of their potential. Guided by three Vice-Chancellors in turn, the University has changed dramatically over the past ten years – from campus improvements to the latest state-of-the-art facilities.
It has been an exciting and productive time for them as they continue to work to fulfil their mission of providing an excellent university education for learners from all backgrounds, enabling them to become enterprising citizens and responsible leaders, while promoting economic and social prosperity for the communities we serve.
They want their graduates to be the passionate, creative professionals of the future, and they are pleased to be able to showcase some of the work that they are doing to deliver on that.
They have had many successes this year: being awarded silver in the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework, climbing in all major league tables, receiving their highest ever student satisfaction rating in the National Student Survey, and opening a new home for maritime education and training at our city centre campus.
While there have been far too many achievements to list here, they hope these stories will give you an idea of why they are so proud of what they do, and of everyone who works so hard to make their vision a reality.
The Solent Campus
There's a real energy there on campus. It's a place where innovation, knowledge and creativity can make a genuine impact in the real world. They pride themselves on their work with organizations of all sizes, helping them to meet staffing needs, deliver research projects and innovate within their industry.
